NBC has confirmed Xena reboot is in the works

It was rumored before that NBC was working on rebooting the Xena series. Lucy Lawless, who played the warrior princess, quickly dispelled the rumors. However, it turns out she was wrong. NBC Entertainment chariman Bob Greenblatt has revealed during the TCA conference that NBC is indeed working on a Xena reboot, and that it’s in the early stages.

“Yes, we’re in the early stages of developing a new take on Xena and we’re looking for a writer. We want to do it,” Greenblatt told THR.

The reboot was rumored to bring back executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. As for the lead character, it will be played by a new lead actress, with the company wanting Lawless to return in some capacity. Greenblatt talked about how he wants Lawless to be on the show without having her in the spotlight.

“We’d love to have Lucy be a part of it — if we felt that her presence didn’t overshadow the direction we take with it. I’m not sure how she could be part of it if she wasn’t playing Xena, and I don’t know if that’s a direction we’ll ever go.”

Xena is one of those rare things where the spin-off series became a bigger hit than the original show, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.

The Xena reboot is expected to debut in 2016.
