Five Nights at Freddy’s movie to have a new but canon story

Previously we reported that Gil Kenan (Poltergeist) would be directing the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s live-action movie. After the announcement of his involvement in the project, Kenan began to answer many fan questions about the film and in the process gave us a little more insight about what we can expect.

Kenan revealed that he has already spoken will creator Scott Cawthon and that he will be working close with the developer on the film. Kenan himself is a huge fan of the series and believes that that lore of Five Nights at Freddy’s will lend itself well to a full-length movie.

The lore of the game is the movie’s fuel. I’m making this film for ALL the FNAF fans, not just kids. The story is what makes me most excited about this one… the mythology runs deep, and is truly scary. I’m a big FNAF fan myself! The depth of the game storyline is amazing… Scott is one hell of a world builder!

One of the big pieces of information that Kenan revealed during the spontaneous Q&A is that the movie is in fact canon and takes place in the same universe as the games.

So there is a very good chance that you will likely hear references to The Bite of ’87 and even “The Purple Guy.” Kenan said that the script is still being written, but the film will definitely be connected to the game’s lore. The director also revealed that the film will take place at more than one location. Meaning there’s a good chance that the film will include Fredbear’s Family Dinner and Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria.

Kenan also talked about there possibly being all-new animatronic, but would not confirm. He also hinted that there may be a cameo by Five Nights at Freddy’s developer Scott Cawthon. Scott is also the voice behind “Phone Guy.” This is also not confirmed, but given the level of how close Scott is working with the film, I think it is a good chance he will be in it.

That is a lot of information to take in, but given the details that Kenan gave out on the film, it would seem that the movie is on the right track to being faithful to the franchise.

The Five Nights at Freddy’s film currently has no release date. Stay tuned for more details.
