Expecting an R-rated Punisher on Netflix? You can forget about it

Steven S. DeKnight did wonders to the Marvel and Netflix Daredevil series. The series gave us interesting characters, awesome fight scenes, faithful story and a really dark and gritty world. However, the showrunner won’t be returning for the second season, since he has other prior obligations. He does have info on what we can expect though, especially what Marvel has in mind for Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, as he told Slashfilm during the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

“The thing about The Punisher, and I think there are great things about each of those versions, but none of them was completely the Marvel version,” he said. “And none of those movies were under the Marvel Studios banner until they recently got The Punisher back. So this is really the first time that we’re seeing the Marvel Studios from the Iron Man days, when they can control their own product, actually do this character.”

As for the level of violence, DeKnight says that it won’t be a full R, but somewhere between PG-13 and Rated R, after being asked whether it will be as violent as Punisher: War Zone.

“Doubtful, that was pretty violent,” DeKnight said. “The first season of Daredevil was violent but I always say it was more implied. It wasn’t nearly as violent as The Walking Dead, a show that I love. On that, if somebody were to crush somebody’s head in a car door, you would’ve seen the head crush on screen but we didn’t want to go quite that far. We wanted to keep it right around PG-16 and not go all the way to the R. I have no idea if they’re planning to push it that far next season but I would be surprised.”

Even though Daredevil didn’t actually show certain gruesome scenes, I think the cameras cutting away actually made certain scenes more intense. Unless you think the rocket to the parkour guy was intense in War Zone.

Do you think the Punisher is in good hands, or do you want him to be as violent as Punisher: War Zone?
