Disney planning live-action ‘Night on Bald Mountain’ from Fantasia
Another live-action film from Disney is on its way.
Disney is developing a live-action movie based on the iconic “Night on Bald Mountain,” the closing sequence from the 1940 animated feature Fantasia.
Even though it is still in early development, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless will write the screenplay and executive produce the film.
“Night on Bald Mountain” features a winged creature, Chernabog, that raises the dead. Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky created the music in 1867, which was then arranged by Leopold Stokowski for Fantasia. The original sequence was animated by Vadimir Tytla and had one of the longest shots ever produced in a multiplane camera.
This film will be the studio’s latest live-action reimagining of an animated hit. Upcoming live-actions movies include Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson, The Jungle Book (whose all-star voice cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Lupita Nyong’o, Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley and Idris Elba) directed by Jon Favreau, Mulan, Tim Burton’s Dumbo, Winnie the Pooh, and Tinker Bell starring Reese Witherspoon.
Furthermore, Alice Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to Disney’s box office gold hit Alice in Wonderland, is slated for 2016.
