SMS Audio Star Wars Second Edition Headphone review

We here at Nerd Reactor recently got our hands on the new Star Wars headphones from SMS Audio. The new headphones are the second batch that SMS has released in their line of Star Wars headphones. The new collection includes styles inspired by beloved characters like R2-D2, Chewbacca, TIE Fighter and Darth Vader. Each set comes with a character poster and some stickers, as well as a branded carrying case, cleaning cloth and removable audio cable.

Upon opening the box I was immediately impressed by the design and care that went into the package. For headphones running as much as $200, you should feel like you’re opening something of value. Inside the box I found all the components tucked away neatly. A small sleeve on the inside of the box holds the character poster, some Star Wars stickers and a certificate of authenticity. Nestled in the back of the box is the carrying case that holds the headphones. Now I have unboxed a few fancy headphones here at Nerd Reactor, never have I opened a pair that smelled this good. The closest thing I could compare this to is that new car or shoe smell. I’m not sure if it is done by design or through the natural manufacturing, but it just screams quality.

The headphones are extremely light weight and durable. The majority of the headphones are covered with a protective smooth gum rubber. The inside of the headband is cushioned with leather filled with memory foam for the utmost comfort. These same materials are also used on the over-ear cups. The Oval Fit design makes the ear cups contour to fit any size or shape. In fact the headphones fit so well that it offers a good amount of noise cancellation from outside world. On both sides of the headphones are Easy-Fold Hinges that collapse so the headphones are smaller and easier to store. Obviously your best bet is to put them in the carrying pouch that was given with the box.  Each set comes with a detachable control cable with a built-in mic that allows you to skip and play music as well as answer phone calls.

To test out the headphone’s sound, I listened to wide range of music from Dubstep, Hip-Hop and live Rock N Roll. The Star Wars headphones sport 40mm drivers in each ear cup, which delivered clear high level volume. There’s nothing I love more in a pair of headphones than some ear blistering volume that doesn’t distort. The lows can be clearly heard, but lacked the rumble and punch that I’ve experienced in other headphones around the same price. Still the bass can be heard clear, it is just not as prominent as I’d like. The highs and the mids are where these headphones really shine. While listening to some live recording of Muse, you can really feel the crowd surround you and engulf the sound space. What’s really nice about it is that it does not drown-out the band. The high are clear and crisp, making the vocals and guitars easy to make out.

Final Reaction

For almost two hundred dollars, the SMS Audio Star Wars headphones are a bit pricey. Still the quality of the design and the overall presentation feel worthy of the price tag for any avid fan looking for a pair of good headphone that are inspired by Star Wars.
