Cortana is coming to Android and iOS… with some restrictions

Oh, Cortana. Apparently the AI isn’t loyal to just Master Chief. She has already spread herself out there to the Windows phones, and soon she’ll be available to Android and iOS devices, as revealed by Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore on the Windows Blog. Of course they had to connect it to a Microsoft product somehow. The Cortana app for the Android and iOS will be a companion to the Windows 10 PC.

“Today, we’re announcing a Cortana application for Android phones and for iPhones which works as a companion to Cortana on your Windows 10 PC,” said Belfiore. “The ‘Phone Companion’ app on the PC will help you install the Cortana app from the Google Play or Apple App Store onto your phone so you’ll be able to take the intelligence of Cortana with you, wherever you go.”

Cortana will be able to check out your photos, music, notes and Office documents via the OneDrive cloud storage.

“The Cortana app can do most of the things Cortana does on your PC or on a Windows phone,” Belfiore said. “You can have Cortana remind you to pick up milk the next time you’re at the grocery store, and then your phone will wake up and buzz with the reminder. You’ll be able to track a flight using Cortana on both your phone and your PC, and get the updates on the device that you’re on so you don’t miss anything. Everything in Cortana’s Notebook will show up across all your devices and any changes you make on one device will be reflected when you use Cortana on any of your other devices. The Cortana companion app will help you complete tasks you begin on your PC wherever you are, on your phone.”

Check out what Cortana can do in the video below. A downside is that the app on Android and iOS won’t be able to respond to you calling her name for different operations. Microsoft did mention that certain functions will be made available later.

Select Windows users will be able to upgrade for free to Windows 10 this summer. To get a taste of the action, join the Windows Insider Program for a chance to try out the Windows 10 Insider Preview build. Cortana will be available to Android phones at the end of June, with the iPhones getting it later this year.
