It’s already been known that CBS is working with Arrow and The Flash producer Greg Berlanti on the upcoming Supergirl series, but now it’s confirmed. CBS has greenlit the first season with Melissa Benoist starring as the titular character.

The number of episodes haven’t been confirmed yet, and the pilot should premiere later this year.

Benoist will be joined by Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, Jeremy Jordan as Winslow “Winn” Schott, and David Harewood as Hank Henshaw. Dean Cain and Helen Slater will also join the show, and it’s rumored that they will be playing Supergirl’s parents.

The series will follow Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, an alien who heads to Earth after her home planet of Krypton was destroyed. On Earth, she hides her abilities, but she’ll soon learn to become a superhero.

The show is being produced by Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions (the same production company that does The CW’s Arrow and The Flash). The pilot is written by Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) and Greg Berlanti. The two are also executive producing along with Sarah Schechter and Warner Bros. TV.
