Disney booted Josh Trank from Star Wars spin-off?

Here comes the drama! We have news that Josh Trank will not be directing the Star Wars spin-off movie. The announcement was made by Disney and Lucasfilm (via Variety).

“It was a privilege to collaborate with Josh,” the official statement said. “We are grateful for the energy and love of Star Wars that he brought to the process, and we wish him all the best.”

So what exactly happened?

According to Variety’s source, Trank left the project due to creative differences. One source said that he and screenwriter Simon Kinberg (Star Wars Rebels, X-Men: Days of Future Past) weren’t happy to be working together again, since the two didn’t get along while making Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot.

There were signs of trouble, including one where Trank said that he couldn’t attend the Star Wars spin-off panel with another Star Wars spin-off director, Gareth Edwards, due to a bad flu.

“Hey all. So, so, so sad to have missed today. Worst flu of my life. I hear it went beautifully with Gareth (Edwards). Here’s to next year.”

Oh, it gets juicier. According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s source, Disney executives asked Trank not to attend the panel. What?! It’s not really surprising, since there have been rumors that Trank has been having issues on previous movie sets; for example, when he was trashing the Fantastic Four set.

We also have The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider talking about the director’s first movie, Chronicle, being fixed in post without him.
