Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One will focus on the heist of the Death Star plans

During Star Wars Celebration panel with producer Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm SVP of development Kiri Hart and Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, it was revealed that the upcoming Star Wars spinoff films will now be called “Anthology” films. The Anthology films will vary in size and scale and will introduce new characters and places. Kennedy said that the standalone spin-off films were George Lucas’ idea and it was one of the first things that Lucas talked to her about. “[Lucas] was really interested in exploring all the stories that might exist within the universe,” said Kathleen Kennedy.

In addition, Gareth Edwards showed the first teaser for Rogue One. The teaser starts with Sir Alec Guinness’ “before the dark times, before the Empire” monologue from Episode IV. A TIE fighter flies across a lush forest river canyon and as the camera pans up you see a silhouette of the Death Star above the planet’s horizon. You hear the sounds of garbled pilot/soldier voices as they crackle over radio comms as the film’s logo is shown. You hear screams of “Fall back!” before the sound and title card fizzle out as if a signal has been abruptly cut off.

Yes, that means that Rogue One will focus on the rebels’ mission to steal the Death Star plans (the rumor was true). The film will take place before Episode IV and will be based in an era without the Jedi. “The absence of the Jedi is omnipresent in the film. It hangs over the whole movie,” said Edwards. He described the film as a group of individuals that doesn’t have magic powers, that have to bring hope to the galaxy. Also, Rogue One is very much a war film, “it’s called Star WARS,” Edwards said. In order to get the war-like feel right, he enlisted the help from the department heads from various war films such as Black Hawk Down and Zero Dark Thirty — including Zero Dark Thirty‘s Greig Fraser as the Director of Photography. Rogue One’s star Felicity Jones will be playing a rebel soldier.

It sounding very much like Rogue One will be the Saving Private Ryan/Halo: Reach of Star Wars films.

The director of the other Star Wars Anthology film, Josh Trank, was listed to join the panel as well but bailed for sickness reasons.

UPDATE: The teaser has leaked online.
