Hannibal episodes to be directed by Guillermo del Toro

Hannibal 2

Fannibals, rejoice! The excitement for season three just got even bigger; acclaimed director and huge geek Guillermo del Toro will be directing one of the final three episodes of the new season of NBC’s Hannibal.

Del Toro won the hearts of nerds with fantastical, but dark films like the Hellboy series, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Pacific Rim. Fans of horror (and Tom Hiddleston) are currently eagerly awaiting his newest gothic film, Crimson Peak, which hits theaters October 15th and also stars Jessica Chastain and Charlie Hunnam. He’s well known for his passion for geek culture, comics, and video games, and was set to be involved in Hideo Kojima’s Silent Hills, the future of which is now uncertain. His works has always delighted with a touch of twisted madness and an appreciation for what is exquisite in the macabre.

By those merits, Del Toro seems to be a perfect fit for a show as contorted and morbidly beautiful as Hannibal, and it should come as no surprise that he’s a fan. The other two of the final three episodes will be directed by Guillermo Navarro, who directed several episodes in the show’s first season and has also worked with Del Toro on a number of films, and Michael Rymer, the man responsible for the intense season two finale. Topping last season will be a major feat, but NBC is promising a conclusion to this third season that the audience won’t soon forget.

Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait until the summer to get our fix of plaid, nightmare stags, and five-star cannibalism. Fans can eagerly anticipate Richard Armitage’s portrayal of Francis Dolarhyde who is likely to play a major role for at least the first half of the new season along with Hugh Dancy’s troubled Will Graham and Mads Mikkelsen’s conniving Hannibal Lecter. All in all, it’s an agonizing wait for the premiere, but you’ll be able to catch ‘Antipasto’ on June 4th at 10 p.m.
