New Sherlock Holmes Christmas special takes place in Victorian London

Sherlock Victorian

Part of the allure of BBC’s popular Sherlock Holmes reboot was the fact that it brought our titular hero into the modern era with all the benefits (and drawbacks) that the present day affords. Watson no longer writes his adventures in a journal. Rather he blogs about them. And Sherlock has to stave off not only common conmen and thieves, but also terrorists with explosives.

But for this year’s Christmas special, showrunner Steven Moffat has decided that everything old is new again. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Moffat confirmed that this year’s Christmas special will be set in Victorian London. Not surprisingly, Moffat also confirmed that the Christmas special will not be canon to the world that he has already created.

Said Moffat to EW, “The special is its own thing. We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So, we had to do it—and we could hardly conceal—it’s Victorian…It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”

The agonizingly long wait between seasons of Sherlock is already difficult, so it’s great to hear that Sherlock will be back in the saddle (possibly literally) this upcoming Christmas. And although no formal air date has been announced, it is quite likely that the new special will be broadcast in London this December.
