Director says Akira live-action film is dead in the water

akira-project-01Good news for all you fans who were not too keen on seeing a live-action American adaptation of the beloved anime and manga Akira. The director for the project was recently interviewed and according to him, there has been zero progress made on the film.

“No, no. There’s nothing.”

Collet-Serra has been attached to the film for quite sometime. He was first announced as the director of the film back in 2011. The film itself has been in pre-production since 2002. Serra just completed Run All Night, an action film starring Liam Neeson. He also directed Neeson in Non-Stop.

In the interview, he revealed that both movies were filmed back-to-back and he has no plans to take on any projects in the near future.

“A vacation! I truly will not make a decision on a movie for a few months because I’ve done these two movies in three years without any time off so I cannot wait for this movie to come out and just fade away. So my next movie’s not gonna be for a while, let’s put it this way.”

Collet was asked if this means that there is no hope for Akira.

“It’s a Warner Bros. question.”

Does this spell the end for Akira? It’s hard to say. The film has been in the works for the last fourteen years and can’t seem to hold down a director or a screenwriter. Only time will tell.
