The Lord of the Rings’ Middle-earth to get a theme park

There are many theme parks out there featuring popular franchises. Disney has many of its characters in its theme parks. Harry Potter is featured in the Universal Studios theme parks. Star Wars is represented in the Disney theme parks. DC characters are represented in the Six Flags theme parks. That’s great and dandy, but what about the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth?

If you’re living in Spain, consider yourself lucky, because a Middle-earth theme park is going to be constructed in Rincon de la Vicoria, and it will be called La Comarca (The Shire). Mayor Francisco Salado revealed their plans during the International Tourism Festival in Madrid via Euro Weekly News.

“The Shire will become one of the major tourism attractions of our town. The material will have a very low environmental impact, to create an integrated image in nature,” said Salado. “It will be a place in which family leisure, sports and nature will go hand-in-hand in a unique space of great beauty set in a time of fairy tales and the magic of the elves. Without a doubt, Rincon de la Victoria will have a top-rated tourist attraction, which will also add to the variety of attractions of Malaga.”

The park will be split into many different areas with Augmented reality being integrated. One zone, for example, will be the Zona de Adventura (Adventure Zone) where attendees will be able to climb walls, check out hobbit homes, and go on swings and slides. In the middle of the park will be a “medium-sized lake.”

The park will be based on the book and not on Peter Jackson’s movies, so don’t expect to hear Andy Serkis’ Gollum or Orlando Bloom making an appearance.
