Guild Wars 2 expansion, Heart of Thorns, announced

At this year’s PAX South convention, ArenaNet announced its first major expansion, Heart of Thorns, for the “free” MMO, Guild Wars 2.

In a surprising turn of events and a first for massively multiplayer games, ArenaNet will not be raising players’ levels past the current level cap of 80. Unlike the typical run of major MMO expansions which allow players to add on anywhere from five to ten (perhaps more in some rare cases) extra levels on top of their already maxed-out characters.

By not offering additional levels to those who purchase the expansion it nullifies the treatment of “level creeping,” thereby maintaining an even playing field among players. However, ArenaNet is instead allowing players to access new “masteries” systems, which will allowing them to harness new skills and talents as they work through quests within the Maguum Jungle. The progression in the Masteries system is entirely account-based; this means one will not have to go through and complete all the tasks and adventures again with every separate character. Whew, that is such a relief. What you do with one character, will allow you to buy unlocks for all your characters.

In addition to the new “masteries” systems, players gain access to the new “specializations” via their characters’ professions. These in turn offer more cross-class skills and talents to incorporate, and – my favorite part, by far, all new weapons.

“I think you need real character progression that you can keep using to evolve your characters long after you hit max character level and have the best gear in the game. Now you understand why we had to go build this expansion pack,” said ArenaNet president and co-founder Mike O’Brien, as reported by Polygon.

Of course, in this new expansion lies an all-new profession, a “Revenant.” Although not much is known about what it is exactly, you can be assured you can ArenaNet is trying to bulk up Guild Wars 2.

“Channel legendary powers to slaughter foes and unleash chaos on the battlefield with our brand new profession: the revenant. Enter the field of battle heavily armored and equipped with the otherworldly powers of the Mists,” reads the ArenaNet’s description for Heart of Thorns.

Finally, there is a new WvW map for players to battle on. Not to mention the new PvP “Stronghold” mode, and the premiere of Guild Halls for the numerous guilds in the game to buy and/or outfit to their liking.

There is no announced release date or price for the expansion as of yet, but be assured we will keep you informed when more information becomes available.
