24 without Jack Bauer: A good idea 13 years ago

Since the release of 24: Live Another Day, there’s been tons of talk regarding the 24 movie and bringing the series back. In an interview back in December 2014, Kiefer Sutherland has stated that he may not go back to 24, seeing Live Another Day as the end of the series. Now, FOX Chairman and CEO Dana Walden has dropped a bombshell that another installment of 24 is coming potentially without Jack Bauer.

“We have discussed it with him. We talk to Kiefer all the time. He’s a great creative partner, potentially he won’t be in this installment. We’re not sure yet. We’re not that far along, but I know he supports us doing more 24.”

Granted, the idea of a season of 24 has been tossed throughout the internet before, but given that 9 seasons and a TV movie have been made with Jack Bauer as the central character, it’d be hard to get die-hard fans to toy with the idea now, myself included. The main reason I watched 24 was to see Jack Bauer kick ass and take names. His character has been built so well and Kiefer has done a fantastic job bringing life to Jack, it wouldn’t be the same without him. Which is why the headline reads, “24 without Jack Bauer: A good idea 13 years ago.”

TonyPhoneWould a season without Bauer work today? Maybe. Would a season without Bauer work when Season 2 started? Absolutely! Given that 24 has created tons of potential characters in Season 1 to take his place, it makes better sense for FOX to have tested the idea so early in the show. And since Season 1 ended on such a low point for Jack Bauer, his absence makes more sense. So who would replace Jack since he left CTU? Best option would be Tony Almeida.

Instead of Jack answering the call from President Palmer, he ignores it and remains home still grieving over the loss of his wife Teri. Tony Almeida steps in and takes Jack’s place in the season until Jack’s return in episode 16, with him breaking out Kate Warner out of custody due to the call from Jonathan Wallace. The rest of the season can play out the same, but that’s more than half the season without Jack as the main character and giving another main character the main spotlight. Had FOX wanted to wait until Season 3 to test the show without Jack, his role could have been replaced by Chase Edmunds. Everything can play out the same with Chase having to break out Ramon Salazar. Once they arrive to meet Hector, his brother, we can see Jack still deep undercover among the Salazar family and semi-working alongside Chase in finding the virus.

These are just some ideas my brother and I have thought up with 24 without Jack Bauer. For Season 6 we even thought Mike Doyle was going to replace him until a bomb blew up in his face. For now, 24 isn’t the same without Jack Bauer. Whether FOX’s idea to produce 24 without Bauer is a way to stir up buzz for 24, we’ll have to wait and see how it plans out, if it even does.
