Marvel’s Spider-Woman gets a complete makeover

The last comic book character to get a big makeover was DC Comics’ Batgirl. Now Marvel is joining the makeover group with Spider-Woman.

The classic red-and-yellow body-hugging tights worn by Jessica Drew for 40 years will now be getting a new modern look. Yeah, that means you won’t get to see any more controversy like Milo Manara’s artwork. The new outfit is designed by artist Kris Anka, and she’s sporting a new spider design, glasses, and overall look.

The new Spider-Woman is playable in the Spider-Man Unlimited mobile game. The new outfit will debut in March in comic books. (We’re now seeing her going in a different direction in life that will lead up to the new look.)

“As much as I’m a fan of spandex and it has its time and place, I felt Jess as a character could move away from that for a good long while,” says Spider-Woman editor Nick Lowe.

Dennis Hopeless, the series writer, hopes the changes will benefit the character. “You’ve seen her as a superspy and Avenger and soldier. Now let’s see this person as an old-school hero.”

“As a woman myself who loves games and comics, I love to see that functional, cool stylish look. It’s like a jacket I would want to wear daily,” says Tatiana Nahai, product manager for Gameloft.

The new outfit still pays homage to the old. For example, the trangles are still present, along with yellow-lens glasses to emulate spider-eyes. (The glasses can become a facemask with a click.) She also has the web gliders underneath her arms that comes out from the back of her jacket.

“To operate on the level she wants to, she needs something that can pass for semi-normal and she can turn it on to crazy if she needs to,” said Lowe.

It looks like this won’t be her final outfit, as we’ll probably get to see stages.

“I don’t think we’ve landed on the iconic Spider-Woman yet,” he says, “and this is our entry into that.”
