John Lasseter to direct Toy Story 4 for 2017 release

Just when you thought Toy Story 3 had the perfect ending for a trilogy, we now have news that Pixar is going to be working on a fourth film with Toy Story 4. John Lasseter will be returning to the franchise that started it all, and he’ll be directing once again. (He directed the first two Toy Story films.) The fourth installment will be coming to theaters June 16, 2017.

The news was made by Walt Disney Co. chief Bob Iger to the Wall Street analysts as he was talking about the company’s fourth quarter and fiscal year results.

So why revisit the Toy Story series?

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” said Lasseter. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. ‘Toy Story 3’ ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another ‘Toy Story’ movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”

Joining the project as writers are actress/writer Rashida Jones (The Social Network; I Love You, Man) and Will McCormack (Celeste and Jesse Forever), with Pixar’s Galyn Susman (ABC’s Toy Story OF TERROR!Toy Story that Time Forgot) is producing.

Lasseter is also attached to helm the third Cars movie.

Here’s the Toy Story 4 team, including Lasseter and Jones.
