The six actors in the mix to play Doctor Strange

While most fans are still reeling over the news of Robert Downey Jr. joining the cast of Captain America 3, Marvel is still on the aggressive search for their Sorcerer Supreme. With Joaquin Phoenix ultimately passing on the role, Marvel went back to the drawing board and has concocted a shortlist of amazing actors to play Doctor Strange. An announcement is coming sooner than later and there’s a chance that these six actors could be your Doctor Strange. Here are the six actors (via Variety):

Jared Leto
BY THE HOARY HOSTS OF HOGGOTH! Jared Leto has been in the mix for a while now, and is one of the original rumored actors who are still in the mix. Insiders are saying that Leto has been aggressively pursuing the role since Joaquin Phoenix passed on the role. Despite being notoriously picky about his part, the fact that he’s been aggressively pursuing the role is a good sign that the Oscar-winning actor is all in for the role.

Matthew McConaughey
Well alright, alright, alright. Jared Leto’s Dallas Buyers Club co-star Matthew McConaughey is one of the new names added to the list. It’s unclear whether or not McConaughey is available with his upcoming busy schedule (winning an Oscar can do that to an actor), but Marvel feels confident that they can get any actor for Doctor Strange since they came close to signing an actor with such caliber as Joaquin Phoenix.

Ethan Hawke
Seeing Ethan Hawke’s name on this list isn’t surprising. He’s previously worked with director Scott Derrickson on Sinister and has recently garnered acclaim in Richard Linklater’s Boyhood. Like his Lord of War co-star, Jared Leto, Hawke has been pursuing this role early on and is still very much in the mix.

Oscar Isaac
The Star Wars: Episode VII star has been a hot commodity after his acclaimed roles in Inside Llewyn Davis and A Most Violent Year. With Marvel and Lucasfilm in the same Disney family, maybe Marvel has seen Isaac’s ability in Star Wars and is keen on bringing him into another Disney tentpole.

Ewan McGregor
Speaking of Star Wars, the actor formerly known as Obi-Wan Kenobi has recently joined the mix. As Badass Digest previously reported, he’s expected to meet Marvel concerning the role and has “been prepping for the role; doing the usual research actors do when looking at taking on an adaptation or existing character.”

Jake Gyllenhaal
Rounding out Marvel’s list is Prisoners star, Jake Gyllenhaal. Insiders are saying that Gyllenhaal is keen on playing a superhero after his recent string of dark films such as Prisoners and Nightcrawlers. Yes, he was meh in Prince of Persia, but he’s still a phenomenal actor.

Out of the six listed, who is your choice to play Doctor Strange?
