Robert Downey Jr. to join Captain America 3 and introduce the [SPOILER] storyline

Tony Stark is back!

Variety is reporting that Robert Downey Jr. is on the verge of reprising his role as Tony Stark in Captain America 3. Currently, Downey has two more films in his contract that includes Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers 3.

This deal for Downey almost didn’t happen as Marvel wanted to hire Downey for a small role. However, Downey wanted Stark to have a more meaningful role in the film’s plot, which in turn would give him more screen time and a bigger payday. This payday, of course, angered the notoriously cheap Ike Perlmutter who “ordered” the screenwriters to write Iron Man out of the script entirely. It wasn’t until Kevin Feige fought for this deal to happen so he can execute his grand vision for the next couple of years. Feige wanted Perlmutter to see that in order for the studio to thrive for the next couple of years, he needed Robert Downey Jr. to be a part of Captain America 3.

And the reason why Feige wants Downey to join Captain America 3 is so he can introduce…

Civil War. Yes, Feige wants Robert Downey Jr to join Captain America 3 so he can bring Civil War into the MCU.

“The deal is significant for the Marvel cinematic universe considering the plot will pit Stark against Captain America’s alter-ego Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, as they feud over the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force for the authorities.” Variety continues, “Stark supports the program, but Rogers does not, saying it threatens civil liberties, causing sides to be taken and Rogers, among others, to go on the run to avoid arrest. The moral question and battle with his Avengers teammate essentially makes Stark a villain of sorts in “Captain America 3,” providing Downey with a meaty role he could play out into future Marvel films, including a fourth “Avengers.”

Whether or not Civil War will be the focus of Avengers 3 remains to be seen. Thanos still is lying in the shadows of the MCU and it’d be a shame to keep him out of the fight past Phase 3. My hope is that the Civil War storyline will be the focus of Avengers 4.

“Civil War #1” being teased earlier today, Marvel Studios and Sony negotiating to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, Anthony and Joe Russo teasing that Captain America 3 would be a bigger game changer than The Winter Soldier. It all makes sense now. Civil War is coming to the MCU.

What do you think Marvelites?

Captain America 3 is set to blow people’s minds on May 6th, 2016.
