James Gunn says J’son of Spartax won’t be Star-Lord’s dad in Guardians of the Galaxy 2

In the comics Peter Quill’s father is J’son of Spartax, Emperor of the Spartoi Empire. It’s the reason why Peter’s middle name is Jason. When watching the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, it is revealed by Yondu (Michael Rooker) in the end that Quill’s father sent him and his Ravagers to find Quill and bring him back to his father. Well, it turns out Yondu decided to keep Quill all to himself. We never really find out the identity of the father, but we do know that his blood was the reason Quill was able to control the Orb.

In an interview with Empire, director James Gunn has revealed who the father won’t be:

“It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics,” says Gunn. “I’ll say that much… There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us. That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff.”

As for whether we’ll be seeing more of Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Gunn says it all depends on the story:

“He will show up if he helps our story,” says Gunn, “and he will not show up at all if not. Thanos is not the most important thing in ‘Guardians 2,’ that’s for damn sure. There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos.”

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hits theaters on July 28, 2017.
