Marvel turning Thor into a female

Okay, I will admit it. I watch ABC’s The View whenever I get the chance. Sure it doesn’t have the beautiful Elizabeth Hasselbeck, outspoken Star Jones, witty Joy Behar, and amazingly awesome Barbara Walters all sharing screen time anymore, but it does have Whoopi Goldberg and some big news every once in a while. Being a primarily female-focused show, the folks over at Marvel decided to announce some big Marvel news on today’s episode. Marvel Comics will now be turning Thor into a new female character.

The new series will be written by Jason Aaron (Thor: God of Thunder, Original Sin) and drawn by Russell Dauterman (Cyclops) and will be out this October.

“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

I bet some people are stoked that they are bringing in more females into the universe which could possibly cross over onto the big screen (cough cough Katee Sackhoff), but many people are not aware that this is not the first Female Thor type character, in fact Thor Girl was already a character.

There are also a few versions of Valkyrie, who was kind of a big part of “Fear Itself” and was the 19-year-old girlfriend of Thor in the Ultimate Universe. Then there was my favorite rendition of the future Next Avengers as Thor’s Daughter in both the comics and animated film.

Either way it’s some big news and most of us were expecting a Peggy Carter/Agent of Shield announcement. I guess that will have to wait for the future. Some aren’t fans of this new idea, and I would expect both sexes to prefer to see Chris Hemsworth dawning Mjolnir on screen, but a female partner similar to Thor’s Beta Ray Bill would be a nice addition, maybe even taking his place in a Planet Hulk film (crosses fingers)?

What do you think?
