Rian Johnson to write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII

Looper director Rian Johnson is set to direct the next Star Wars film, Episode VIII. Sources said earlier, Johnson would be directing both episodes VIII and IX, but this is not the case. He will be writing and directing Episode VIII, but will write a treatment for Episode IX.

Johnson is known for his directorial debut of the 2005 indie film Brick, which won the Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision in 2005. He followed that up with 2008’s Brothers Bloom and the 2012 sci-fi hit Looper. He has also directed some of the best episodes from AMC’s Breaking Bad.

Johnson did not release a statement regarding the announcement but tweeted this clip to his followers. Johnson had hinted earlier he was in the running for the Episode VIII gig on Twitter during his exchange with Star Wars spinoff writer Gary Whitta.

Johnson tweeted this video clip earlier:

Lucasfilms have not released an official statement.
