E3 2014: ‘Sunset Overdrive’ is fast paced and fun

sunset overdrive 2

When I first saw the trailer to Insomniac Games’ Sunset Overdrive, it made me think of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, mixed with Dead Island, mixed with Dead Rising 3, mixed with The Simpsons game. Yes, the Simpsons game because of how kooky this game is.

Sunset Overdrive is set in the year 2027, where corporations have taken control of everything that happens in the cities. Fizzco, a greedy corporation, have released a new energy drink called OverCharge Delirium XT in Sunset City. Little do they know, the people who drink it become evil, crazy deformed mutants. Your characters didn’t drink the “Kool-Aid” and have to survive the apocalypse by making sure those mutants don’t destroy your energy towers (vats filled with Overcharge Delirium). It’s up to you and your multi-player co-op (up to 8 players) to save the day.

You could play this game solo, but the version I played at E3 was called Night Defense. sunset overdriveWith Night Defense. we were a team of four fighting against mutants to prevent them from attacking the tower. We had a meter on the side to let us know if the tower is threatened. We had a plethora of unique weapons – a vinyl record shooter, roaming candle gun, a Dynamite Teddy gun, and so many awesome weapons. We were also given traps to set to kill off more mutants.┬áThe best part of the game were the weapons. There were a variety of mutants and with my team, we were all able to shoot them down together. The weapons were what made the game so much fun. They were all so unique and explosive at the same time. As you kill more mutants and do cool stunts, you earn power-ups!

The fun part of the game is that you just keep moving. You can grind and rail through the anywhere and climb. The whole point of this game is to just keep moving and shooting. The colors and the imagery of the game was stimulating.

Sunset Overdrive was overwhelming at first, but the game just instantly became fun when you just immerse yourself into the game. It wouldn’t be an Insomniac game without it being chaotic. This game was great and I definitely want to play some more of it.

Sunset Overdrive will be released exclusively for Xbox One on October 28th. You can pre-order it here.
