KCON – Korean Pop Culture Convention

At this rate, you may have heard of someone who listens to Korean pop music (also known as K-Pop) avidly or know of the increasing international phenomenon taking over the States. For the last decade, fans around the world have fallen in love with actors and performers from South Korea. Dazzling folks with sensuous physiques, popping beats, and charismatic personalities, K-Pop entertainers have grown into the Western world with a complimentary flare to the values of today’s entertainment. In 2013, KCON brought Korean entertainment and culture to the West Coast with over 200,000 fans in attendance. Since then, it has become the biggest K-Pop convention in North America.

If you’re new to the K-Pop scene, you’ll run into another term that is being used: “hallyu”. Hallyu is a term coined since the late 1990s to label the wave of all things from South Korea. For the longest time, Hallyu held popularity predominantly in Asia, but in recent years, it has gone global! KCON is the true testament to hallyu’s success.

This year’s KCON continues this tradition and brings use some of the hottest artists who have contributed to Korean culture’s popularity in the pop field:

CNBLUE, a four-man rock band who have been performing together since 2010.

BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan), bringing the American rap-culture into their artistry when they came together in 2013.

SNSD (So Nyeo Shi Dae), also known as “Girls’ Generation”, a nine member pop group who remains one of the most popular K-Pop groups since 2007.

Whether you’re a fan of the music, the fashion, the TV shows, movies, or the culture, KCON is definitely where you need to be! KCON 2014 begins August 9-10 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. For further information and tickets, check out KCON USA.
