Ubisoft under fire for lack of playable females in Assassin’s Creed Unity and Far Cry 4

Ubisoft has been getting some negative feedback for not including playable female characters in both Assassin’s Creed Unity (campaign mode) and Far Cry 4. This lead to journalists all over debating whether Ubisoft was having “female problems.”

When asked about adding playable female characters for Assassin’s Creed Unity, Ubisoft said that it would be “double the work,” due to creating new body types, animations, and etc.

Far Cry 4 director Alex Hutchinson had this to say:

“It’s really depressing because we almost… we were inches away from having you be able to select a girl or a guy as your co-op buddy when you invite someone in. And it was purely a workload issue because we don’t have a female reading for the character, we don’t have all the animations,” he explained. “And so it was this weird issue where you could have a female model that walked and talked and jumped like a dude.”

Although not playable, there will be strong female characters in both games. Ubisoft said, “We look forward to introducing you to some of the strong female characters in Assassin’s Creed Unity,”.

Hutchinson added, “I can guarantee you that in the future, moving forward, this sort of stuff will go away. As we get better technology and we plan for it in advance and we don’t have a history on one rig and all this sort of stuff. We had very strong voices on the team pushing for that and I really wanted to do it, we just couldn’t squeeze it in in time. But on the other hand we managed to get more of the other story characters to be women.”

These reasons did not fly with some.

Others called Ubisoft out by saying that it doesn’t require a lot of work to animate and rig a female character.

So what do you guys think? Do you think Ubisoft should introduce playable female characters in their Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry games? Are their games that feature strong female characters like Child of Light, Beyond Good & Evil and Assassin’s Creed Liberation not enough?

Far Cry 4 will be available on November 18th for the PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
