E3 2014: New Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain trailer is dark and tragic

To be fair, Hideo did warn us. One of the most talked about trailers leading up to E3 was that of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The long awaited MGS sequel had gained much hype due to the controversy and success of Ground Zeroes. Via his twitter, Hideo warned fans that the trailer he was preparing for the show would be much darker than anything we’ve seen before.

The new trailer is a much more sadistic and blood-hungry Big Boss. Covered in blood, you gather that Snake may be out for revenge due to the events from Ground Zeroes. In one scene, we can see Big Boss spreading the ashes of a fallen soldier across his face. Paz? It looks like there is even a flashback sequence featuring Paz’s attempt to assassinate Snake. Much of the trailer seems to revolve around the loose of fellow soldiers and how it has affected Big Boss.

After the trailer was released, Hideo posted on twitter that he hoped the overall message got across from the trailer.

My intention to tell everyone IS THESE Dudes That Are Gonna Fall into Evil.

This is further backed up by the Mark Twain quote in the beginning of the trailer. “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than on to anything it is poured.” Looks like we may get to see Big Boss’ transformation from the war hero in Snake Eater into the villain from the original Metal Gear NES game.

Expect to hear more from the new Metal Gear Solid title later this week. We are slated to check out a 30-minute gameplay demo, so be sure to look out for our coverage of MGSV at E3 all week!
