In the midst of hiring a replacement for Edgar Wright, Marvel seems to be pushing ahead on its next Phase three film: Doctor Strange. Variety is reporting that Marvel has chosen Sinister director Scott Derrickson to helm Doctor Strange. Previously, Derrickson was on a shortlist of directors that included Mark Andrews (Pixar’s Brave), Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) and Dean Israelite (Welcome to Yesterday). The Hollywood Reporter adds that Marvel is also looking for writers for the project and that “Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger are said to be in the mix.”

Derrickson’s credits include the upcoming Deliver Us From Evil, Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Judging by his filmography, Marvel is keen on bringing in the dark, frightening, supernatural elements that populate the world of Doctor Strange into the MCU.

Marvel hasn’t been shy in teasing Doctor Strange in its films with the Orb of Agamotto in Thor, The Crossroads reference in Thor: The Dark World and a not-so-subtle namedrop in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It’s also been known that Feige has been working on getting the Sorcerer Supreme on screen for quite some time now, and he’s finally getting that chance with Derrickson at the helm.

Doctor Strange revolves around the egotistical neurosurgeon Stephen Strange who was involved in a debilitating car accident. He survived but the nerves in his hands were severely damaged. Too vain to accept his fate, Strange exhausted his fortune looking for a cure for his disability. Upon hearing of the rumors of a mystical “Ancient One”, Strange seeked him in hopes that the Ancient One will be able to cure him. After accepting the Ancient One’s offer to teach him the art of mysticism, he eventually became the dimension’s greatest magic practitioner: The Sorcerer Supreme.

Derrickson and Marvel will now look for its Stephen Strange and expect a full reveal at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Doctor Strange is slated to be released sometime during Marvel’s Phase Three.

PS. This guy makes some scary ass films.
