From Sin City to the MCU: Josh Brolin cast as Thanos

UPDATE: Both The Wrap and Variety are confirming that Thanos will make an appearance in next year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron — with The Wrap reporting that Thanos will “have a more prominent role” in Age of Ultron and he will in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Well here it is Marvelites, the last cast member of Guardians of the Galaxy that is yet to be revealed is now out in the open. It’s been well documented (1, 2, 3) that Thanos would have a role of some sort in Guardians. The capacity of that role is not yet known, but what is known is that Thanos will be a part of Guardians for sure. However, to pull off the complex and insane character of Thanos, Marvel needed an actor with an incredible acting ability  — just like they did casting James Spader as Ultron.

Last month, Kevin Feige revealed “there is an actor [for Thanos]. I’m not sure we want to announce it yet.” Latino Review seems to know who that actor is, and that actor is none other than the Goonie himself: Josh Brolin. That’s right, Brand is set to play the Mad Titan Thanos. He’ll be providing the voice of Thanos and with an actor like him I’m sure he’ll do an incredible job. Currently, we don’t know whether or not Brolin will do motion capture for Thanos or how many films he’s signed on for.

It’s been quite the journey for Josh Brolin when it comes to comic book movies. He first starred in the terrible Jonah Hex, went on to play a young Agent K in Men in Black III, starred in the remake of the manga adaptation of Oldboy, and next you’ll see him as Dwight McCarthy in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Brolin was also in the running to play Batman before Ben Affleck ultimately won the role.

Thanos was first seen in the post-credits stinger in The Avengers (originally played by Damion Poitier) and is considered by many Marvel fans as one of the most dangerous villains in the entire Marvel universe — especially with the Infinity Gauntlet in his possession. With the Infinity Gems in play in the MCU, expect Brolin to show his insanity and love of Death in future Avengers films.

What do you think of Josh Brolin as Thanos?

Guardians of the Galaxy space travels into theaters on August 1st.
