Hyperdimension Neptunia PP – Raise an idol easily (review)

The Goddesses of Gamindustri have started to lose their powers and their shares due to an idol band known as MOB48 (a parody of Japanese Idol band AKB48), which is composed of different monsters the Goddesses have beaten in the past. To regain their shares and powers the Goddesses decide to fight back by becoming Idols themselves.

Developed by Idea Factory, Hyperdimension Neptunia PP (Producing Perfection) seems to take some ideas from [email protected] and leaves out nearly anything interactive which takes away quite a bit of fun. Since the Goddesses have no idea how to become idols, they summon a producer from another world. It turns out that they summon a completely random guy who does everything on the fly. After choosing which Goddess you want to manage, your task is to turn your Goddess into a top idol and help them not only become bigger than MOB48, but also gain back the lost shares while getting tons of fans and trying to top the charts (which in the game aren’t that important).

Your daily task is to choose what your Goddess’ daily task will be. You have the choice of raising their different performing skills, doing promotional works to obtain more fans, give them time to relax and lower stress which is gained by them working and performing, spending some quality one-on-one time with your Goddess to raise their affection towards you, have the Goddess hang out with other Goddesses from the other regions, or perform a concert. It quickly becomes repetitive, study, study, promote, rest repeat and so on, but things do have a tendency to change since there will be random scenes will appear depending on your relationship with the Goddess which can give you some pretty perverted or funny scene depending on who you are paired with.

When your Goddess has enough Guts she can hold a concert. As the manager you can pick what song she sings (each character has one song, and as you progress you get the other songs). You can customize their looks and location on stage, select which stage they perform on as well as choose special effects to use as they sing. As the Goddess performs, you can select the camera view and activate the special effects as you try to get the fans pumped which is about all you do as they sing. You really can’t fail just do ok, but it’s pretty easy to get a high level by listening to the fans call out each Goddess name and activating the special effects then which sky rockets the fans hype levels.

Hyperdimension Neptunia PP isn’t canon to the other titles, but still has everything from the series including the CPU candidates who appear often to help out and interact with you as you play. The game features English and Japanese voices but all the songs are performed in Japanese and the game uses the same animation style found in the the Neptunia RPG games making it very familiar for fans of the series.

Final Reactions

Hyperdimension Neptunia PP really simplifies the idol simulation games to the bare minimum. The game feels more like a dating sim with a very small mini game during your concerts. It gives you 180 days to complete your mission to be an idol, and you can complete that mission well under that without as much as trying. Much like many RPGs you also carry over your stats and relationship points with each girl over to the next game, meaning after one and a half full playthroughs with each Goddess, you can have them all at S ranks with full relationship stats.

The game doesn’t have much of a challenge curve which makes it really easy to lose interest quickly with almost no interaction at all. In the end my first playthrough lasted about 2 hours off an on, and now less than an hour to complete the quest to be an idol, since I can beat each goddesses quest to control the most shares by holding only one concert, and then doing some promotional work so that my game would be completed by day 30. This makes the game go into the final concert mode and ends, which is funny because whatever song I performed, it wouldn’t even reach the top 5. It did, however, gave me enough shares to complete the objective.

In the end Hyperdimension Neptunia PP leaves you wanting to do more.
