John Wesley Shipp’s role revealed in CW’s Flash

If the name John Wesley Shipp sounds familiar to you, it should. He played the original Barry Allan, and he will play the father of the new Barry Allan (Grant Gustin) in CW’s Flash. He will be in the premiere episode and be a recurring character. Mr. Shipp donned the Flash outfit back in the 1990-1991 CBS TV show. Though short-lived he played the role of Barry very well. Now we get to see a new person don the Barry Allan Flash costume.

If you remember from the few episodes Barry Allan showed up for, then you remember him saying that his dad was in prison for a crime he did not do. The person he saw that killed his mother was a red and yellow blur and that his dad was blamed for it. Now he is working in the police department, spending most of his time looking for supernatural cases just to find a clue about the blur.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Greg Berlanti (executive producer) had this to say about John Wesley Shipp:

Given his history with The Flash, Andrew[Kreisberg], Geoff [Johns] and I could only think of one person we wanted to play Barry’s father and that was John Wesley Shipp. He gives a fantastic and emotional performance in the pilot, and we are looking forward to his presence in many more episodes…Also, personally, it was just wonderful to work with him again since my days at Dawson’s Creek. He’s a great actor and a great guy.

This casting news is great. I loved the old school Flash TV show, and I can’t wait for this to air. Are you excited about this casting? Let us know.
