The wizarding world of Harry Potter will take off its invisible cloak and reveal itself once again. It was announced this week that the film adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has a release date of November 18, 2016. The original book that is just under 60 pages is a wizardry textbook that makes appearances in Harry Potter’s world both on screen and page. The story follows the endeavors of Newt Scamander, a “magizoologist” who is in pursuit of discovering magical creatures. The events take place 70 years before the Harry Potter series, but is not necessarily a “prequel” or “sequel” of any kind. J.K. Rowling has simply stated that the characters and situations just exist in the Harry Potter universe.

This will be the first of many for author J.K. Rowling. Last September, she and Warner Brothers jointly-announced their partnership. Warner Bros. has said that they plan for this film of Newt Scamander to be the first installment in a three-film series of his magical adventures. J.K. Rowling will also be making her screenwriting debut on this series as she has already written a draft for the first film.

Is it too soon for a new series? Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be making a premiere just five years after the last Harry Potter film. As already stated, this will not involve the Boy Who Lived and his friends, but my heart is still not mended after the Battle at Hogwarts. Similarly, The Hobbit movies debuted nine years after the final Lord of the Rings which proves that fans do not tire quickly. In retrospect, the Harry Potter series is the highest grossing film franchise of all time with a total at the box office of $7,723,431,572. Newt Scamander has a high act to follow. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will cast Expecto Patronum on us all November 18, 2016.
