Ridley Scott in negotiations to direct The Martian

It looks like Ridley Scott is setting his sights on outer space once again. With movies like Alien, Blade Runner and Prometheus under his belt, Scott is in negotiations to direct yet another sci-fi adventure called The Martian according to The Hollywood Reporter. Twentieth Century Fox is looking to make the film with Matt Damon being considered for the lead role.

Originally, Drew Goddard was going to direct the film, but left the project due to a commitment to Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off film, The Sinister Six. Besides Scott likely stepping in for Goddard, he will join Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood as a producer on the project.

The Martian is based on a novel written by Andy Weir which was self-published by Amazon on September 27, 2012. Although he’s not in the director’s chair, Goddard still wrote the screenplay for the film. The story focuses on an astronaut who struggles to survive while stranded on a Martian colony as NASA attempts to organize a rescue mission. It’s described as being similar to films like Cast Away and Apollo 13.

Scott’s upcoming film, Exodus: Gods and Kings, starring Christian Bale and Aaron Paul, is in post-production and will open on December 12th of this year.
