Transformers: Age of Extinction’s Ken Watanabe to be a samurai Autobot with Goodman as Hound

Transformers Age of Extinction 15

Some are excited to hear that John Goodman and Ken Watanabe are lending their voices for the upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction movie, but as a Transformers fan, I’m more excited about Frank Welker’s involvement. In truth, I’d be more excited if Michael Bay wasn’t involved.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, John Goodman will be voicing the Autobot Hound. It’s rumored that Hound was going to be a “samurai” Decepticon who turns into an Autobot to gain back his honor, but that rumor was squashed. In the classic cartoon, he was a scout and also one of the original Autobots to land on Earth inside the Ark four million years ago.

Can you imagine Goodman as a samurai? I don’t think so. So who’s the likely samurai robot? Ken Watanabe will voice the Autobot Drift. In the IDW comics, he was a Decepticon named Deadlock who becomes the Autobot Drift. He wields a sword (see below).

Here is Drift as the 2013 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. It’s pretty much the fastest legal street car in the world. You’d think a samurai Autobot would transform into a Japanese car, but I guess he loves his German products (I’ll refrain from making a WWII joke).

The news I’m most excited about is Frank Welker voicing Galvatron. If you didn’t know, he was the original voice actor for Megatron, but Hugo Weaving was able to voice him in the Transformers films. Galvatron is an upgraded and newer version of Megatron, so it kind of makes sense that Welker will be doing the voice. In the animated movie, Galvatron was voiced by Star Trek’s Leonard Nimoy, who also voiced Sentinel Prime in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. As for Welker, this isn’t his first time in a Michael Bay Transformers movie, since he voiced Shockwave, Soundwave, and Barricade.

Peter Cullen will once again reprise his role as Optimus Prime. Other voice actors include John DiMaggio (Bender from Futurama), Mark Ryan, Robert Foxworth and Reno Wilson. Crosshairs will be voiced by DiMaggio and Lockdown by Ryan. Foxworth will once again voice Ratchet with Wilson as Brains.

Transformers: Age of Extinction hits theaters on June 27, 2014.
