PS4 gets a major update today, including dimming the controller

Oh, happy day! The PlayStation 4 is getting some major updates today with v1.70.

For me, I’m mostly excited about the ability to dim the light bar on the DualShock 4 controller. The light bar is a novel idea, especially for use with the Camera, but for those who don’t have the camera or aren’t into the pretty light show, this new feature is a big plus. You’ll be able to change it to Bright, Medium or Dim. Although Dim isn’t really that dimmed, it just means that the Bright setting is really bright.

Another feature for the DS4 controller is the ability to use the touchpad for  on-screen keyboard. It makes typing faster, since you’re not relying on the d-pad or analog stick to move the cursor around (although you’ll have to practice on pinpoint accuracy).

For other PS4 users, the biggest update would have to be the SHAREfactory feature. This allows you to easily edit your videos, whether you want to add special effects, do picture-in-picture commentary, or add custom soundtrack from your imported music via the USB drive, you now have that option. Check out the video to see more features from SHAREfactory.

Other features include the Automatic Pre-download, where titles you pre-order will automatically download before the game becomes available at launch. By allowing you to download early, it means you’ll get to play the game when it’s ready at launch.

For those who like to stream using 3rd-party hardware, the Option to Disable HDCP for Games is a nice feature.
