WonderCon 2014: Son of Batman – The voices behind the movie

Son-of-Batman-2

2014 is the 75th anniversary of the Batman franchise from DC Comics, and WonderCon was packed full of Batman-related events which consisted of panels, artists and even a special short. WonderCon was also hosting the world premiere of the newest DC animated movie, Son of Batman.

Voice director Andrea Romano has been in charge of giving the characters life by finding the right voice actor to play the iconic DC character since Batman the Animated Series, and when asked about Jason O’Mara returning to voice Batman, she responded with, “Since it tied in animation wise with Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, we decided it made sense for him to return to the role, which he did an amazing job in.” When asked about some of the voice actors she would love to work with in future titles, she admitted she has a large list of talent when the right project comes.

Sean Maher plays the voice of Nightwing in the film, and in a roundtable interview he was asked a few questions including his feeling about Firefly:

Sean said, “It [Firefly] means the world to us, I can safely speak for the entire cast and Joss Whedon, as well. Shooting that show was truly one of the best times in our lives.  To have it resonate so strongly, 12 years later, is extraordinary.  I feel humble, we all love that show, we still see each other… what everybody connected with is still going on, on a personal level.”

He then talked about how he got involved in Son of Batman?

“Andrea Romano is a fan of my work, and we had been in touch and then she sent me an email and said, ‘I have a great role for you.’ I said that was wonderful and then we worked on my availability. I’ve heard amazing things about her, and that was it. I didn’t know what to expect. This is my first animated performance, so I showed up and I had a picture of Nightwing on my music stand as I was doing the voice acting.”

Spoiler if you haven’t seen Arrow, but Sean talks about Shrapnel getting killed off. Sean smiled, “I still don’t understand. Everyone keeps telling me that they were so mad that Shrapnel died. They killed him, it happens.”

Jason O’Mara returns as the Dark Knight and was joined by his son for the event. When asked who his favorite DC character is, he said Batman. Together with his son, Jason watches Batman cartoons, their favorite being the Batman: The Animated series. Jason talked about how he watch the Adam West live-action Batman growing up.

Son of Batman is available digitally now, and on DVD and Blu-ray May 6th, 2014.
