eSports added to this year’s X Games

COD_Full_SailThis is huge. For years now, eSports and MLG competitions have been steadily growing in popularity around the world. MLG.TV alone has seen over 1557% growth in live viewers in the past 4 years. With over millions of viewers across over a hundred countries, it seems like it would only be a matter of time before they caught the eye of a big TV outlet. Which is why ESPN announced yesterday that an MLG gaming tournament will be included in this year’s X Games in Austin.

While some fans are a little shaky on the idea, MLG CEO Sundance DiGiovanni couldn’t be more excited.

“It’s going to be [MLG] bringing our high-level production into a really full weekend. We’re looking to build something here that hopefully becomes a tradition at both the summer and the winter X Games over time.”

“We are for the first time in a position where we have the league structure, the broadcast piece, the direct access to media and brands who are interested in advertising and marketing to this audience, and it’s built in such a way where there’s this tremendous scale in front of us.”

Truly, this is a great opportunity to get MLG’s name out there in the masses of “normal people.” Even X Games’ Senior Director of Content Tim Reed thinks the match is a perfect fit.

“X Games is thrilled to include Major League Gaming into the overall content mix. Gaming, sports, music and interactive are a huge part of youth culture, and the inclusion of Major League Gaming is a perfect fit to the X Games events and brand. The MLG X Games Invitational will bring new fans and audience to the festival and we are looking forward to hosting everyone in Austin.”

It should be interesting to see how these two cultures clash on June 6th.
