PaleyFest 2014: Veronica Mars Reunion

VeronicaMarsPaley23With the success of the Veronica Mars: The Movie Kickstarter, the movie is now complete and ready for the world to view! The creator (Rob Thomas) and cast of the film (Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Enrico Colantoni, Ryan Hansen, Chris Lowell, Francis Capra, Percy Daggs III, and Tina Majorino) were all present to kick off to the 2014 PaleyFest, presented by the Paley Center for Media, at the Dolby Theater last night.

Veronica Mars ended after three seasons on the CW network in 2007. With the return of the beautiful sleuth seven years later, we asked the cast what they thought, before the movie became real, what they thought happened to their character?

Francis Capra (Eli “Weevil” Navarro) admitted he thought his character went to jail. “I thought he was doing hard time, but in this movie, you see a complete change as a family man. He really has his life together.”

Percy Daggs III commented on his character Wallace Fennell, “My character played a lot of basketball and I wondered how far he went with that – whether he was a college basketball player , whether he made it to March Madness, tried out for NBA teams, and with mechanical engineering, which he struggled with, and how fair he made it. I kind of wondered, but I never made any determinations in my own mind on what had happened. A part of me thinks he stayed in Neptune.”

Enrico Colantoni (Keith Mars), because the season ended with Keith getting rid of the evidence that would land Veronica in jail, he predicted his character, “would had gone to prison. There is no denying that. Or he may had been acquitted. It makes sense that Veronica just left Neptune and finished her college education at Stanford.”

Chris Lowell (Stosh “Piz” Piznarski) said of his character, “Piz started teaching chemistry, got diagnosed with cancer, started dealing meth with one of his students… wait that’s not what happened?!?! I’m in the wrong place. Breaking Piz.”

Jason Dohring (Logan Echolls) said of the character, “I have no idea. I don’t know what Rob was going to write. I know his past. His parents were gone. His girlfriend was killed. The relationship he wanted didn’t happen. Betrayed by family members. Every bad thing happened, you would think we were a daytime soap opera. There’s a level of down that you couldn’t get any lower. I was happy he was given more upturn and more discipline in his life.

As the cast prepared to enter the sold out theater for the Veronica Mars reunion, Rob Thomas kicked off the night with an introduction to the Behind the Scenes documentary that showed how it all started, the process, the fans, the filming and the promotion of the film.

After the documentary, Rob and the cast entered the crowded room full of cheers for the reunion. They talked about how the Kickstarter happened and how every cast member followed the Kickstarter. Jason commented that his mother-in-law kept track of the Kickstarter and mentioned how viral it was becoming. Host Alan Sepinwall of HitFlix asked if the cast kept constant tracking of the Kickstarter. Chris joked, “Well, I just called to make sure I didn’t have to pay the $10,000 to be IN the film.”

Kristen called Jason out for not knowing the Kickstarter went live until Ryan texted him, “Can you believe it?” Jason responded, “Believe what?”

Alan mentioned the Kickstarter video that featured Rob, Kristen, Jason and Ryan asking for support and asked the other cast members if they were worried about not being in the film. Francis said he was the first to say yes. Chris joked, “there are her two best friends, the gangster, Dick, papa bear, ‘smolder’ and I was dead in the water.” Percy added, “There was no way they were leaving me out, I had the NCAAP on speed dial!”

Alan asked if the cast found it hard to slip back into character after a seven year hiatus? Chris joked, “Ryan never dropped his character.”

Rob did mention the potential fourth season of Veronica Mars with Veronica being an FBI agent. With the likelihood of Veronica Mars being cancelled, the CW asked Rob to come up with a new show regarding an FBI agent,”So I went to them with Veronica AS the FBI agent.”

When asked what shows they’d like to see come back on TV, Rob responded, “Freaks and Geeks.” Jason added, “Party Down” (a show created by Rob and starred Ryan).

Rob was asked about the “shipping” of the characters and whether he would had thought of pairing others with Veronica or pairing other characters together. Rob responded, “We thought about a lot of those, but we never landed on those that made sense or felt natural or right for the series. I feel like a Veronica/Wallace pairing would rip up a friendship that was so key. Where do you go from there if the romantic relationship doesn’t work out?” Percy added, “I didn’t want that to happen. I like my job. Purely platonic.” Francis joked, “I was playing with it a lot of times. I thought I really had a shot for awhile.”

Rob joked, “I really had to think about how drunk Veronica had to be to hook up with Dick. Pretty drunk.” Kristen interrupted, “But you did write that!” With that, Rob plugged the first book in the Veronica Mars series is coming out. He added, “You might see some Veronica on Dick action.”

A fan later asked the question we all had been wondering, “Did they have any plans to bring back Duncan (played by Teddy Dunn)?” Rob responded, “I thought about it. If we had more money or time, a sequence for the end questions – like Samuel L Jackson in the Avengers – I was thinking about a sequence that showed Duncan and Lily. I would had loved to see a taste of them. If Duncan were to come back in the movie, he couldn’t just show up at the high school reunion and say ‘Hey! I kidnapped a baby and ran cross country.’ How have you been? It would had to had been about that. It didn’t make sense to make a cameo. I thought about it for a long time.”

The panel ended with lots of laughter and the cast signing autographs and taking photos with the fans. The entire cast was so appreciative of the fans and it really showed that night.
