Even though The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug didn’t win for Best Visual Effects during the Oscars, the film still had some impressive visuals. One of the action-packed scenes in the film is the barrel scene where the dwarves and Bilbo Baggins try to escape from the elves while battling orcs.

The action scene lasted for about 7 minutes in the film and had over 98 hours of footage in the editing room. It was complex since it included aerial shots, green-screen sets, live-action shoots, and CG environments.
