Ottawa Geek Market supports mental health initiatives

This past weekend saw the return of the Ottawa Geek Market, a local event that harnesses geek power in support of a different charity at each event. Visitors braved the snowfall to attend the two-day shopping experience featured more than 40 exhibitors selling items including comic books, art, clothing, jewelry, books, toys, collectibles, video games, and board games. If you’re into sci-fi, fantasy, steampunk, horror, anime, gaming or cosplay, then this is the place to shop.

Since its inception in 2012, the event has proudly raised more than $5,000 for charity and seen over 5,200 patrons, many of whom come in costume. This time around, the event supported The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, which is a mental health treatment center, a research facility, and an advocate for removing the stigma present around mental illness. “Each event we’ve held supported a different charity and had a different theme. It just made sense to us to focus on mental health this time around since it affects us all, especially this time of year” said Stacey Young, Co-Founder of the Ottawa Geek Market. “The Geek Market is a celebration of Ottawa’s thriving geeky community, and we’re proud that we can help out such a great cause while also promoting local exhibitors, artisans and fan clubs.” Percentages of each ticket sold, all well as 100% of the proceeds from the event’s silent auction, with included a Zelda Wii U Deluxe Set, will be donated to The Royal, who were promoting their HealthyMinds App at the event.

Ottawa’s tight-knit geeky community appears to embrace the event with open arms, and much of the events success is a result of the incredible talent of the local artists who sell their wares. There was also an abundance of Lego creations on display, as well as figures for sale. All-in-all, the event and its charitable intentions are met with vigor and enthusiasm from the locals, which is good news for all.
