Cortana is Siri’s rival

It seems that Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8.1 will challenge Apple’s Siri and Google’s Google Now. The Verge has posted pictures of the upcoming update and some of the details on what you can do. The Cortana you see will not be the female figure that you see in the Halo games, instead it will be a ring-shaped animated icon.

Cortana will give the users the choice of being called by their name, or “Master Chief,” after enabling it in the settings. Cortana will also be able to save the information that the users give in a system called Notebook. She will be able to access information such as reminders, contact information, personal information, location data, and behaviors of the user. Cortana can also track flights or emails and have it pop up a notification for the user.

Bing, Four Square, and other services will give Cortana data it needs to give to the user. Now just because they are calling it Cortana during the test phase, it is not certain that they will stick to this name. They will give more information on this update on their upcoming Build Conference, in which they will also release a developers preview of Windows Phone 8.1.

This is a great move for Windows, especially if they stick with the Cortana name. If it is done right and works great, they can pick up a few more followers for their phones. I can’t wait to see how this will do. Are you excited for this update?
