Seth Rogen developing 90s Sega vs Nintendo console war film

mariovssonicSeems like movies based on video games are going to be the hip new thing in the next couple of years. With the overwhelming success of Wreck-It Ralph, a lot of films are making their way through Hollywood’s pipeline. News broke earlier this week that Seth Rogen and his writing partner Evan Goldberg are currently developing a film centered around the infamous console war between Nintendo and Sega during the 90s.

The film is based of the book Console Wars by Blake J. Harris. The book is a behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles the rise of Sega to meet the console juggernaut that was Nintendo. Hundreds of Sega and Nintendo employees were interviewed to serve as a source material for the story. The book doesn’t even come out until May 13th.

It’s the story of how a humble family man, with an extraordinary imagination and a gift for turning problems into competitive advantages, inspired a team of underdogs to slay a giant and, as a result, birth a $60 billion dollar industry.

Rogen and Goldberg are also slated to direct once they’ve finished up with the script. Given the nature of the material, it’s shouldn’t come as a shock that The Social Network and  Silicon Valley‘s Scott Rudin has jumped on board to produce. No actors are attached to the project yet, but word going around is that this film is expected to have a much more serious tone compared to Rogen and Goldberg’s other work.

The duo have always done fairly well with comedy. It should be interesting to see what they do with a serious subject matter. I wouldn’t put it passed them not include in a few laughs. As a 90s kid myself, I am majorly looking forward to this film.
