Nintendo will be releasing apps for smartphones

Sony and Microsoft have recently been using smartphones to promote video games, sometimes even offering second screen apps. Nintendo decided to focus solely on their consoles. It was fine for the Nintendo Wii, but now with the Wii U struggling, Nintendo has decided to make a small change.

Announced by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, Nintendo will be releasing smartphone apps to promote their games. You won’t see full games on a smartphone as Nintendo wants to show “the value of our entertainment offerings, thus encouraging more people to participate in Nintendo platforms.”

The apps will start appearing sometime this year, which will be used to gain more attention to their line up of Wii U games. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to also get unlockable items for your main game either, if you can tie your Nintendo Network to your smartphone.

You can see more information at the official Nintendo page (translated in English).
