Could Thor 3 storyline revolve around Ragnarok?

When it was announced that Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost would collaborate in writing the script for Thor 3, the question most people asked was which comic storyline would the next Thor be based on? The most popular choice among the fans and Chris Hemsworth was Roy Thomas’ Ragnarok arc.

If Drew McWeeny is right, then Ragnarok is exactly what we’ll be getting in Thor 3. “By the end of [Avengers: Age of Ultron], the team that we saw in the first film will be shattered. There will still be a group of people called The Avengers, but it’s not going to be Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, and Captain America anymore. The third film will have to bring everyone back together to stand against Thanos as he finally makes his move on Earth, and considering how many of the Infinity Stones he’ll have by that point, I’m not sure how anyone’s going to plan to stop him.” McWeeny said.

“More importantly, if my sources are correct, the end of ‘Age of Ultron’ sets up a difficult situation for Thor as Midgard and Asgard find themselves looking at a possible war. Could we be looking at the beginning of Ragnarok, brought on by Loki in the guise of Odin? Could the third film find Thor having to fight against the realm that he’s spent so much time defending?”

Those unfamiliar with Norse mythology should know that Ragnarok is essentially the apocalypse, the end of everything. In the Marvel universe, it is the end of all Asgardians set in motion by Loki’s actions. In the end, it became a giant battle between the Asgardian gods versus Loki’s army of troll giants, the fenris wolf and the goddess of Death, Hela (Loki’s daughter).

Since it’d be too far fetched to give Loki a daughter, could Loki’s ally in Ragnarok be the fire demon Surtur? Muspelheim was teased in Thor: The Dark World so it is a possibility.
