Valve’s Source 2 Engine image reveals Left 4 Dead 3 possibility?

Valve’s Source Engine has been the backbone of their biggest franchises like Counter Strike: Source, Half-Life 2 and Left 4 Dead. The source engine has pumped out some of our most beloved games.

As much as we all love Source, it’s time for the next big thing and it looks like we are getting a taste of it. The above image is an alleged comparison of the Plantation level in Left 4 Dead 2. The top is rendered with the Source 2 Engine. The image was leaked by a trusted contributor on the Neogaf forums, which gives this possible leak somewhat more weight.

By the looks of it, there is a huge jump in graphical quality, but this image does raise some questions: Why a Left 4 Dead 2 map? Could this be a possible sign that they are developing Left 4 Dead 3? Not necessarily, as it is a common practice for developers to compare against existing assets.

The release of the Source 2 Engine will likely usher in the next generation of Valve titles. Considering the impending release of Valve’s Steam machines, it’s reasonable to assume that they are planning to hit the market with some serious flagship titles.

We like to joke that Valve is afraid of the number 3. Half-Life 2, Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, but what if Valve is just waiting to hit us all with a triple threat and release all 3 with the Source 2 Engine? It’s a perfect complement with the Steam OS and the Steam Machines. We can only hope.
