Animeland Wasabi heads to Colorado starting February 28th

Animeland Wasabi

This upcoming February, I have the opportunity to attend my very first anime convention. Animeland Wasabi will be taking over the Crown Plaza Hotel in Denver, Colorado February 28th through March 2nd. Founded by Andrea Cortright and Miller Timmons, Animeland, Wasabi is dedicated to providing a “New Way to Anime” which means bringing an awareness to the importance of anime culture through the convention, panels and staff.

I’m looking forward to checking out the Con’s “Animeland University”. For someone like me who is wading into unfamiliar territory, this may be my first stop in learning more about anime culture and how it affects not only this convention, but pop culture as a whole.

I’ve been prepped by a few of my friends and NR coworkers about what to expect*, but I’m really just looking forward to the new experience. This year’s Guests of Honor are Jeremy Shada and John DiMaggio, the voice actors of Finn and Jake from Adventure Time. I’m a huge admirer of Adventure Time and, in particular, the work of Mr. DiMaggio whom we’ve featured on NR recently. Colorado convention stalwarts will also be in attendance, which represents owners of replica vehicles from film and television. Maybe I can get my picture taken with the Mach 5 from Speed Racer (I’m assuming they won’t have the “Cat Bus” from My Neighbor Totoro).

Animeland Wasabi has lined up an array of impressive performers, musicians and cultural figures in the sphere of geek and anime culture. Some of the guests include Ona Grauer (Archer and Stargate Universe), Teryl Rothery (Arrow, Dragonball), Anne Bryant (Theme composer for Transformers, My Little Pony ‘n Friends and Jem) and cosplayers Destiny Nickelsen and Nicole Marie Jean, among many others.

I’ve never been to a convention like this before and am immensely looking forward to it. If you’re in the Denver area February 28th through March 2nd, you should stop by The Crown Plazza Hotel to check it out. Learn more at the official website HERE.

*A few of my NR cohorts had to explain to me what a Maid/Butler cafe is.
