Rumor: Marvel looking to Johnny Depp to play Doctor Strange?

The Marvel brand is getting bigger and stronger with each casting announcement. With names like Robert Redford and Michael Douglas joining the Marvel camp, it is practically Robert Downey Jr. that’s the biggest star of them all. With Robert Downey Jr’s contract expiring after Avengers 3, Marvel is looking for another bankable star to help be the poster boy of Marvel when Robert Downey Jr is gone. Just who might that star be? Johnny Depp, of course.

While The Lone Ranger and Dark Shadows were box office flops, Depp is still one of the most recognizable figures in Hollywood. That is why Marvel is very keen on hiring the actor to star in Doctor Strange. That’s right, Doctor Strange, the Master of the Mystic Arts. According to Latino Review’s well-connected source, Depp has met with Marvel to discuss taking on the role Doctor Strange. The 50-year-old actor is a big comic book fan (especially Namor) and he also has a very good relationship with Marvel’s parent company, Disney. After all, it was Disney who gave Depp his first blockbuster tentpole with Pirates of the Caribbean. If Depp and Marvel can work out the details of the contract then expect an upcoming announcement.

Johnny Depp as Doctor Strange is the type of casting decision that fans have clamored for a while now. It may have been that fanboy favoritism that brought the two sides together.

Latino Review also has indicated that should Depp take on the role of Doctor Strange that a bit of the script would need to be revamped. The original script had a 30-year-old Stephen Strange, but with Johnny Depp being 50-years old that will have to change. But Marvel would be willing to alter the script if Depp signs the contract.

With Doctor Strange practically on lock, and factoring in Kevin Feige’s plan release a sequel followed by new property each year going forward, Marvel’s Phase 3 films may look something like this:

  • Ant-Man (2015)
  • Thor 3 (2016)
  • The Inhumans (2016)
  • Captain America 3 (2017)
  • Doctor Strange (2017)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (2018)
  • The Avengers 3 (2018)

Marvel has a rough idea of what they’re doing up until 2021, so excluding any box office fails, they’re following a plan.

What do you think?

Doctor Strange is set to be a Phase 3 film.
