The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug tops the box office with over $70 million

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is number one at the box office over the weekend, grossing $73.7 million. It wasn’t able to top the box office opening of the first movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which grossed $84.6 million.

There are many factors as to why it performed less than its predecessor, like receiving okay reviews for the first movie and the competition from other blockbusters like Disney’s Frozen and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Since critics and fans are generally saying that the second movie is better than the first, the second weekend might fare better.

Frozen is still going on strong at number 2, grossing $22 million for its third weekend.

Third place is Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas, which debuted at $16 million.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is at the fourth spot with $13 million.
