Naked Gun reboot: Ed Helms to play Frank Drebin

Earlier today, Variety has reported that Paramount is rebooting the Naked Gun series. Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant, who are best known for Night at the Museum and Reno 911, are attached to write the new script. The bigger news is that star Ed Helms (Hangover, The Office) is portraying the classic role of Frank Drebin, originally played by the late Leslie Nielsen. As a fan of the series, I’m a bit curious to see how the movie will play out. No one can truly replace the comedy genius of Nielsen, though I feel that Ed Helms is a great choice to bring back the franchise.

Originally started as a TV cop spoof, Police Squad!, in 1982 (which was based on his character from the 1980s comedy, Airplane), Nielsen went on to play Frank Drebin in the ’88 comedy classic, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! The film had two sequels, Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear and Naked Gun 33 ⅓: The Final Insult, all of which cemented Nielsen’s career from dramatic to comedy.

Despite Hollywood’s neverending need to reboot franchises, some don’t need to be tampered with while others could use an update. I find myself always asking “What would _____ look like if it was done today?” I can’t say I have said that about Naked Gun, but it would be great to see if they can capture the great parodies that Leslie Nielsen was able to deliver.

No word yet on a release date, but we’ll keep you posted. For now, enjoy this video with some of the funniest clips from the Naked Gun trilogy.
