Marvel and Netflix join forces to bring you Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones to the small screen

Giant Marvel news has just been announced this week. No, it has nothing to do with Ant-Man or anything in Phase 3. The news involves four characters that are about to make their way to the small screen. Marvel and Netflix have announced a deal that will bring Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones to Netflix in their own serialized programming.

Led by a series focused on Daredevil, followed by Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, the series will unfold over multiple years on Netflix that will take us deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains in Hell’s Kitchen. So far, Netflix has committed to a minimum of four thirteen-episode series and a culminating The Defenders mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.

“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty,” said Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment.

“This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

“Marvel’s movies, such as ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Marvel’s The Avengers,’ are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “With ‘House of Cards’ and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.”

In the comics, The Defenders were founded by Doctor Strange, The Hulk and Namor as the team fought and battled various forms of mystic and supernatural threats. Throughout the years, members included such characters as Silver Surfer, Red Hulk, Vision, Scarlet Witch and Iron Fist among others. While it doesn’t look like most of these characters will be joining the team, a series based on these four heroes can work.

Remember this is the MCU’s version of The Defenders so the founding members can change from the original. Keep in mind that an appearance by Doctor Strange in the mini-series event can actually happen. Doctor Strange was the leader of The Defenders and the one constant member of the group. With a Doctor Strange film pretty much a lock to join Phase 3, he could be the connecting factor between the MCU and the Netflix serials. And who knows, these four superheroes could join the fight against Thanos when the Infinity Gauntlet saga finally comes to theaters.

Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and The Defenders comes to Netflix starting in 2015.
