Call of Duty: Ghosts breaks $1 billion*

Call-Of-Duty-Ghosts

Today, Activision has sent out a press release stating that they have sold $1 billion of Call of Duty: Ghosts to retailers on Day 1. With those kinds of numbers, it takes the trophy away from Grand Theft Auto V. Well, I will go ahead and put an asterisk right by that headline, since the headline by Activision is very misleading.

The actual line in the press release is:

Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), announced today that the company sold more than $1 billion of Call of Duty®: Ghosts into retail stores worldwide as of day one.

And that is where linguistics comes into play. They sold $1 billion of Call of Duty: Ghosts to retail stores.

That is where the difference between Grand Theft Auto V and Call of Duty: Ghosts differ in a big way. Grand Theft Auto V sold $800 million to consumers while Call of Duty: Ghosts sold $1 billion to retailers, and they also count sales from Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to the numbers. While I praise Activision for selling $1 billion to retailers, you have to wonder how many of those will the retailers actually sell.

So I wish Activision luck on getting that number, but I seriously doubt it will beat the $800 million sold to consumers that Grand Theft Auto V did. Tell us what you think of this little news that Activision has put out.
